Telluride Mountain Biking

Finding yourself on an old mining trail pedaling toward the heavenly 13,000 foot peaks on every side is a normal experience for many bikers in Telluride. The area is filled with dirt roads and trails from the mining era, making for the perfect setting to explore the backcountry of the San Juan Mountains.
The Telluride area offers a diverse array of bike trails, from mellow rides around town to aggressive single-track throughout the ski resort. A variety of backcountry trails on the ski mountain are accessible via the free gondola. The gondola runs out of the Mountain Village every day from 7 a.m. to midnight starting on May 23 until the end of the season. The ski resort offers mostly moderate to difficult downhill terrain, making it one of the most popular downhill biking hills in the area.
Looking for a trail that the whole family can enjoy? The Alta Lakes Trail is approximately a 10 mile loop with a 1,700 – foot elevation gain. The 1870’s mining town of Alta is recognized as significant, according to the National Register of Historic Places. Make sure to bring your camera for this ride, the trail along Alta Lakes offers picturesque views and lookouts over the San Juan Mountains.
If you are in search of an adventurous biking trip and have the time spare, explore the bike route along the San Juan Hut System. This 200+ mile mountain bike route begins in Telluride and ends in Moab, Utah. Each hut is approximately 35 miles apart, offering lodging and a place to re-fill water bottles. This route follows dirt roads and alpine trails throughout Colorado, leading to slick-rock trails of Utah’s canyon county.
